Children’s participation in organised sport in NSW

In the 12 months leading up to April 2009, 535,600 children aged between 5 and 14 years participated in organised sport and physical activity in NSW.
  • This number makes up 60.3% of all children in NSW in this age group.
  • It is a drop of four percentage points from 2006.
  • A total of 319,800 (70.4%) boys and 215,800 (49.8%) girls took part in organised sport and physical activities.
  • However, if 'dancing' was included, the participation rates increased to 71.5% for boys and 63.5% for girls

The top sports and physical activities for children in NSW were:

  1. Swimming – 158,000 participants or a participation rate of 17.8%
  2. Soccer (outdoor) – 157,400 participants or a participation rate of 17.7%
  3. Netball – 66,700 participants or a participation rate of 7.5%
  4. Tennis – 62,400 participants or a participation rate of 7.0%
  5. Rugby league – 59,100 participants or a participation rate of 6.7%
  6. Martial arts – 53,900 participants or a participation rate of 6.1%
  7. Cricket (outdoor) – 39,900 participants or a participation rate of 4.5%
  8. Gymnastics/trampolining – 37,500 participants or a participation rate of 4.2%
  9. Athletics, track and field – 31,600 participants or a participation rate of 3.6%
  10. Soccer (indoor) – 30,900 participants or a participation rate of 3.5%
  11. Basketball – 29,400 participants or a participation rate of 3.3%
